Finding the Right People: How to Hire Blue Collar Workers in 2026

Troy Latuff, Owner of The Blue Collar Recruiter and Virtual Trade School in Austin, TX, shares his entrepreneurial journey in the recruitment industry.

People ask me what are the hardest things that come with being an independent business owner? I think the toughest thing about being a business owner today is the learning curve. I have always found it beneficial to be a “sponge” from other entrepreneurs. Join organizations that have ways to collaborate with others so you can learn from other people’s successes and failures.

3 people working

As I launched and nurtured our fledgling recruitment company over the last few years I have  realized there are some absolute necessities that anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today needs to hold dear.

1. Be ready to work harder than you’ve ever worked before.

2. Make sure you have the capital to cover your personal expenses while your business ramps up.

3. Be picky about who you hire. I quickly learned that people are the key to growing a profitable service business. It is critical (especially in the beginning) to find people you like and trust. In many cases, you will spend more time with your team than your family. So to find people that see your vision and want to be a part of it long-term will make your life a lot easier and more productive. And you will have a lot more fun along the way!

Key Strategies for Hiring Blue Collar Workers in 2026

The blue collar workforce landscape has changed dramatically. Employers who adapt their recruiting strategies are finding better candidates, faster. Here are the approaches that are actually working right now:

  • Post on niche job boards — General platforms like Indeed are crowded. Blue collar-specific job boards connect you directly with trade workers who are actively looking.
  • Offer competitive pay upfront — Listing salary ranges in your job posts increases qualified applicant response rates by up to 40%.
  • Emphasize benefits and stability — Health insurance, paid time off, and retirement plans matter more than ever to skilled trade workers.
  • Partner with a specialized recruiter — A blue collar recruiting firm understands your industry, pre-screens candidates, and saves you hours of sorting through unqualified applications.

The Blue Collar Recruiter specializes in placing electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers, and other skilled trade professionals with employers across the country. We handle the sourcing, screening, and presentation — so you only meet candidates worth your time.
