FINDING THE RIGHT PEOPLE – HIRING FOR THE BLUE COLLAR WORKFORCE
Troy Latuff, Owner of The Blue Collar Recruiter and Virtual Trade School in Austin, TX, shares his entrepreneurial journey in the recruitment industry.
People ask me what are the hardest things that come with being an independent business owner? I think the toughest thing about being a business owner today is the learning curve. I have always found it beneficial to be a “sponge” from other entrepreneurs. Join organizations that have ways to collaborate with others so you can learn from other people’s successes and failures.
As I launched and nurtured our fledgling recruitment company over the last few years I have realized there are some absolute necessities that anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today needs to hold dear.
1. Be ready to work harder than you’ve ever worked before.
2. Make sure you have the capital to cover your personal expenses while your business ramps up.
3. Be picky about who you hire. I quickly learned that people are the key to growing a profitable service business. It is critical (especially in the beginning) to find people you like and trust. In many cases, you will spend more time with your team than your family. So to find people that see your vision and want to be a part of it long-term will make your life a lot easier and more productive. And you will have a lot more fun along the way!
